Wilder Girls || Book Review
WOAH.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
A freaky horror story of friendship, leadership, and survival. Chilled me to my bones but not ONE second passed where I wasn't fully submerged in the story.
Hetty, our main character and narrator for most of the book, lives under Navy-ordered quarantine on Raxter Island. The Island was previously known for its fascinating phenomena of Raxter Irises and Raxter Crabs, which turn black as they die. Now, it's spread from Irises and crabs to the other animals, to the girls living on Raxter, changing the island forever.
The Tox has been around for a year and a half now, killing off girls, too many to remember and count. It causes girls to mutate, a scaley hand, a second heart, an eye grown shut, or hair that glows like something radioactive.
This story follows Hetty and Reese after Hetty's best friend Byatt is stolen from her, and her terrifying adventure to get her back, as she learns more and more about what's really happening on Raxter.
If you don't like blood and gore, this isn't for you. The writing is descriptive and sometimes violent, but also very beautiful in my opinion. This book has very much the creepy vibes, but it's also so...real. You can really get in touch with the character's emotions and understand their terror and mindset. This book is written in such a way that you really build a strong connection to each character. The dialogue flows really well too!

SPOILER ALERTTTT:
I"M SERIOUS THESE ARE MAJOR SPOILERS:
My thoughts on the ending:
OK this isn't the ending but I feel like Teddy honestly should've known it wasn't "no boys allowed". I miss teddy 😔 He was always such a sweet and caring character, and he tried to bring Byatt as much comfort as he could. I wonder if he would have tried to help her if he didn't die? Would they have escaped together?
Needless to say, I'm pretty salty(sad) that Byatt kissed him and got him killed. 😢
When the lady and Taylor tried to kill all the girls, needless to say, I was shocked. It was horrifying and disgusting and horrible. Taylor proved to be an interesting character and might be my least favorite. At the beginning, it felt like she was the mom of the group. As the story progressed, you could see how she really was just working for the main teacher lady (I'm sorry I am really bad at remembering names) to save her own butt when all the others got exploded on the island.
As for the ending-ending, I'm wondering if Byatt is actually alive?? It was a bit unclear to me and it felt more like Hetty was really hoping she was alive, and they just brought the dead body of their friend along with them to escape.
Also, I can and can't believe that the navy would straight up murder so many kids?? I hope they get hella sued when Hetty Reese and Byatt get to the mainland.
ALSO, I was thinking about if Hetty and Reese and Byatt would infect everyone, but as they said, it's not airborne, and as we all found out, it's actually a parasite. Originally I was worried they'd just apocalypse the entire world, but with that information, I think they'd probably remove the parasite and be ok :D
