Trash Talking of Mages(Bad Idea)
I straightened my tie and took a deep breath before I swung open the door to the restaurant, relieved by the sweet smell wafting from within. I put my hands along the inside folds of my jacket and pulled out my identification card, and gave it to the man that greeted me, waiting to show me to my seat.
The restaurant was a large one, butlers holding silver platters with various drinks and tall glasses of champagne, and little chocolate tarts I was dying to try. I looked around in hopes to find my date sitting at the table I'd ordered for the two of us, but I couldn't quite see him. The restaurant's aura was a soft one, reserved for a quiet chat and the clinking of champagne glasses made of crystal. Ladies wore gold on their ears or around their necks, their dresses reaching a gown length down to their toes where it only gently dragged against the softness of the marble floor, giving them an almost floating appearance. I looked down at myself, and while I didn't wear a flowy dress or golden trinkets, I grinned at my composition and followed the waiter further into the restaurant.
I tucked a lock of hair behind my ear, careful not to displace my silver diadem, perhaps the only bit of fancy I did wear and willed my power silent for the time being.
"Here is your table, miss." The waiter waved a slow had as though he revealed the table to her as a prize for walking so long. I gave him a polite smile and sat across from the nervous young man sitting there already.
He stood before my bum touched the chair's cushion, and so slowly, I also rose again. He smiled at me and put out his hand to shake.
"I hope you're Maisy?" He asked, surprising me with his gruff voice and steady tone.
"That's right. You must be Luis, it's nice to finally meet you." I replied cleanly and finally took my seat. We sat awkwardly for a few minutes. I relished this kind of tension and felt static on my fingers at his discomfort. I waited intently for him to say something and break the silence, but he did not, so I stepped in. "You teach at the university, right?" I asked when I'd decided the awkwardness was enough for now.
"Yes, I teach physics there. W- what do you do?" He asked me, his voice sticking to the first letter of 'what' longer that it needed to. I picked up my menu and eyed the pictures, not looking up when he spoke or even when I replied.
"I think physics is a terrible subject." Although I wasn't looking at him, I felt his eyebrows lift, and his confidence build.
"Why do you say that?" He babbled, unsure if he’d heard her correctly.
"Can you really look me in the eyes and tell me physics is real, even with the coming of the Mages?" I put my menu down to give him a look.
"The Mages don't actually break the rules of physics, they just bend them. I don't teach Magery, it's a fool's work. Those creatures shouldn't even be here." He retorted, talking even faster, though he made an attempt to keep his voice at the level polite to those around.
I was much taken aback. "Creatures?" I started, unsure for the first time what to say, but determined to clap back at him and his dense concepts. "Better than being a faulty human and their stubborn rules of existence." My hands had moved to my lap and were clasped together, nails digging into my skin.
A young waitress came over with water and poured our glasses. When she asked for our orders, we were too caught up to even spare her a look. The waitress said she would come back in a few minutes and left, leaving Luis and me to our talk.
"Stubborn rules?"
"Yes, stubborn rules for stubborn beings." I gave him a mean grin and watched fright flash in his eyes before his anger.
"Mage." He seethed, his whole composition changing to one of more aggressive nature. "I should've known by the shiny crown of yours."
"Yes, you should have."
"You and your people are all the same. You came here to live lives, but if you're so great and without restrictions of physics, why don't you create your own planet and sun to live on and leave us alone?" He growled, his voice reaching just above the social contract in the restaurant insisted on.
I gasped and flung my hand up and towards him, tipping my glass as I willed the water out of it and onto his face. "How dare you speak about my people like that you ignorant fool! We could bring a whole ocean upon this land, and you dare cross us?" My voice boomed through the restaurant in a way that wasn't humanly possible. Silence fell over the restaurant, and the waitress who had just come back again dropped her tray.
"Yes, I do dare cross you. If I knew I was going on a date with a freak, I wouldn't've come." Luis moved to stand, but I forced his chair to stay put and didn't let him stir a muscle. Fear gripped his body, and it shone in his eyes in the form of near tears. His teeth were clenched per my will, so I wouldn’t have to listen to his ignorant jabber.
The people around me didn't move or speak. The small orchestra shifted to playing something dramatic, and in my irritation, I reached them with my power and froze them as well before taking a deep breath and feeling the fullness of my powers retreat. Carefully, I stood and walked around the table to Luis and sat in front of him with my legs crossed, fist under my chin holding my head up lazily. I smiled at him and watched his fear turn into horror and I let his tears fall. I tilted my head and brought my hand to his cheek, relaxing my fist into a gentle caress, wiping away the tears with my thumb and feeling him tremble. Everything was still except him, and when I pulled my hand away and put it by my side in a leisure manner, I bared my teeth. Three red cuts appeared on his face without me moving so much as to touch him again.
"Remember me, next time you choose to disrespect the Mages." I crooned and vanished, letting go of him and the players, and went back home in a mere thought.
Well, he was rude. I sighed and lay on my bed before bringing my phone out of my pocket through will and switching back to the app to find someone else, someone more respectful.
